Sixteen-year-old Shea McPherson thought she was happy: a longtime friend turned unexpected lover in best friend Tommy Carson, a spectacular view, and her sights on a college far and away from her one-note hometown of Lakeland, Pennsylvania.

But none of it lasted long.

Now it's two months after the end of the school year, the summer between junior and sophomore year coming quickly to a close, and Tommy is dead.

And with him goes all that Shea had once hoped for. Until she meets Asher.

Or rather, Asher finds her.

A self-defined "recovering maladroit", he is weird, brash, and confident to a fault.

So confident, in fact, that he vows to wrench Shea from the pit she's found herself in, reform his awkward ways, and land a spot on the yearbook staff for good measure. And Shea finally learns what it means to be truly happy.
