     Reese meets Tom merely by chance while she's in Hawaii for her brother's wedding, and they strike up a conversation, bonding over their love for running, past relationships, and (in Reese's case, lack of) movie experience. Aspiring screenwriter meets 'aspired' actor.  
     He's charming and kind, and altogether a lovely new friend -- but that's all he is, and all, Reese decides, he will ever be; so when she's called back to her quiet hometown in Oregon to tend to her sick father, her unfortunate past is only one step behind, and so is Tom. 
     A not-as-young-as-he-used-to-be actor, constantly traveling, constantly busy, has enough in his life to keep him one hundred percent occupied until the day he dies.
     A twenty-nine-year-old woman, just beginning to figure out what she wants to do with her life, completely 'not looking for a relationship right now, thank you very much'.
