Sam has lived a tough time, pretty much her whole life. She lives with her brother and grandmother who aren't the easiest people to hang out with all the time. She has a tough time accepting change because she feels like people don't get her and that there is no reason for her to.
Brooklyn has also lived a tough life trying to fight through all the challenges that life throws at him. He sees more of the positive things in the world and has a very optimistic outlook; which is easily contagious.
