Batman is in for the hardest fight of his life: The battle within. If he loses the battle within himself, he just may lose himself forever, but if he wins, what good will it do? That is the thought that he must fight back, while he fights night and day to protect Gotham. He has witnessed pain and despair on an unprecedented level, in a matter of weeks. Selina (Catwoman) is missing, and if it weren't for Alfred, Batman would feel absolutely alone. He doesn't have time to worry about his girlfriend, because he has to find the Riddler, who has promised to kill someone every hour, until Batman figures out where he is-- a silent riddle to figure out. The Joker has escaped jail twice, in the same night. Jim Gordon is in a coma. Bane has slipped through Batman's fingers several times in the last month, due to being hyped up on venom and having seemingly unlimited numbers of allies in the League of Assassins. Two-Face disappeared around the same time Catwoman did, which probably means Selina tried to rob him and got caught. Ivy is dead, thanks to Harlequin, who has stopped being Joker's sidekick for a few milliseconds-- she always goes back. There's also the dilemma with the blue Justice League emergency light flashing on the Batcomputer's desk. No time to worry about their problems... Batman has a choice to make: live and let live or break his one rule, effectively wiping Bruce Wayne from existence.
