Five calm years have passed since the defeat of the Dark Master, Malefor. However, when a mysterious white dragon arrives during a meteor shower, the world that Spyro and Cynder have worked so hard to save is plunged once more into turmoil as an old foe reappears. Now, with the help of new allies, Spyro and Cynder must rise to face the Fallen Shadow that threatens to finish what Malefor first started.

While Cynder grew up in the Dark Temple deep within the Shattered Mountains of Arc-kana where the Dark Dragon Lord Galventer was training her to be evil. However, Cynder doesn't want to be evil, Galventer took notice of this and cast an evil forbidden spell on her and turned her into Dark Cynder. When Dark Cynder was sent on an assassination mission to eliminate the next Dragon Guardian, Spyro, she faced Spyro in a fight but Spyro could tell that Dark Cynder's real self was still inside her.
