In the maritime country of Ballow, the fishing industry is prosperous and offers great wealth. Noblemen and farmers alike have immigrated to Ballow to raise their families, work on the docks, and enjoy the lavish oceanside.
Kallara, a selkie who can transform from seal to woman at will, is blissfully unaware of the changes that are taking place beyond the sea. She lives with her extended family in a cliff dripping with crystals, exploring the village by day and swimming in the luminous sea by night.
That is, until a nobleman finds her carefully hidden sealskin- making her, by tradition, his bride.
Though Kallara tries to enjoy her new life as a wealthy noblewoman, she cannot find it in herself to fall in love with her new husband - he is selfish, insensitive, and is only concerned with his money.
Since Kallara cannot return to the sea, she runs away - and finds a group of magical beings, led by the charming Captain Phineas, whose traditions have also sent them far from their homes.
They decide that they must take action and address the empress of the sea, who is rumoured to live deep in its heart and far from Ballow.
