The surface wasn't what sans thought it would be at all. Him and Frisk are the only two of the bunch left, until they find a human named Hope to give them... well... hope! They go after the thing that started it all, a spell put up to punish monsters even after they broke out of the barrier even if it meant wiping the human race. While finding a way to the spell, sans goes through a massive deppression, and the only two who can help him are Frisk and Hope.
