So many people ask this question and it is considered the biggest fault of the epic LOTR trilogy. I thought I should use this newfound information for good (unlike the ring) to shut you all up and answer life's biggest pondering. After all, if Tolkien applied so much thought and detail into his work, why wouldn't he address this as well?

The King's Heart (Thranduil Fanfiction)
Being a king is hard. Raising a son is hard. Living with eternal grief is hard. King Thranduil is just trying to keep his kingdom running and his son safe when an elf is found with orcs at the border of Greenwood. Who could this mysterious elf truly be? But then the elf he rescued in the forest grows closer to Legolas, and Thranduil can not help but enjoy her company as well. Darkness descends over the forest, all because of this one elf. When lives are threatened, Thranduil must make a choice: his kingdom or his heart. 12/14/21- y'all I wrote this in high school and I kinda want to go through it again and do a bunch of editing. Some of my writing makes me cringe and what are we here for if not improvement. That being said, this story will change starting today probably and if you're in the middle of it, hopefully I don't confuse details or timelines for you. I have tried to keep my own intrusions to the minimum necessary in order to keep the story moving, and I have also tried to capture both the style and spirit of the original Lay in prose form as much as possible. I have used other sources, most notably The History of Middle-earth book series, for where the Lay ends uncompleted. This manuscript was originally completed in 1997, revised considerably in 2009, and is returning to the Internet in 2017 after an eight-year hiatus. It is my gift to Tolkien fandom.
