If there's a theme in Brinley's life, it's fear.
Brinley Justine Smith lives in fear. The fear of dying, the fear of people, the fear about her weight, the fear of everything. She lived in practical black and white and silence. Dead silence. Her wold is basically screaming out for someone to help her but no one hears her. When she meets a so called "spirit", she loses her mind.
