Before anyone ever invests their money, Ari Rastegar says, they should talk to someone with expertise that they can trust. The biggest mistake that people make when they invest their money is that fail to understand the risks involved. "Being a professional investor, being an investor period, is about managing downside risk"

Too many investors fail to take that into account. "People say, just get in the markets, go do this, go do that; that's a sucker's game," Ari Rastegar explained. "By acting like that, you're gambling. There's already a fine line between what gambling and investing is.

Terms like "risk tolerance" and "risk profile" are common in investments, and investors hear them all the time. It's normal to worry about your investments, of course, especially when the markets are down. But Ari Rastegar says that smart investing is more than just figuring the odds. "What we do has to do with statistical analysis; it has to do with calculating variables;

"Especially for a novice investor, the first thing they need to do is go talk to a Registered Investment Advisor," he recommends. "They need to go find a fiduciary; someone that's especially a fee-only investment advisor; someone that will be their advocate, that will help them navigate these waters, first and foremost. And when you go out and do that, you'll build a financial sophistication, because like anything else, investing is a craft."

When all is said and done, it's a lot like most things in life. If you want something down right, you rely on the guidance of a professional, who has the training and experience you need. "If your hand is cut you go to an emergency room," Ari Rastegar said. "If you need to change your oil you go to a mechanic.
