TRAVIS MYRES doesn't fully understand why he has been given a second chance at life. Nor does he think he deserves it. Five years he had given his life to the service of his country; but after losing his men in an ambush, he doesn't know if he can do it anymore. Being sent home on recovery leave, he returns to his family ranch in North Carolina and tries to distract himself with the work needed done there. The last thing he is looking for is a serious relationship.
CHARLOTTE SIMMONS, after six years away from home, two spent as an assistant to a hard but fair employer of media in New York's Big Apple, returns to her hometown in North Carolina. Helping her resentful older sister to care for their sick grandmother. But she is out of practice with the ways of a small town, having grown used to the fast pace of the city. Trying to balance the demands of her job in New York from here with the needs of her grandmother; the last thing she is looking for is a serious relationship.
But when the two meet, unprepared for the whirlwind of emotions and changes the other brings, the connection is undeniable. She loves the glint in his eye he gets when he looks at her; the way no one else ever has. He loves the way she is upfront and honest with him in a way that everyone else is too afraid to be. And surrounded by a world telling them that it will never last, the lovers must prove that they can make it work; even after being pushed to their breaking point.
