Cousins to the King of Navarre, Marie of Cleves and her sisters make their mark on the royal court of Renaissance France. A month into an unhappy marriage to her Protestant cousin, the Prince of Conde, the two are faced with a choice: convert to Catholicism or die.

Marie's decision will alter the course of both their lives, drawing her further into a decadent and treacherous royal court. Scandal and the hope for true love come her way, but will Marie make the right choice? Is she truly destined for happiness? Or will she become yet another scandal of the Valois court?

This 40,000 word novella is the first in a trilogy about the Cleves sisters, known during their lifetimes as "The Three Graces." Updated every Wednesday.

Escape from the Sun King by joanmroberts
57 parts Complete Mature
Escape from the Sun King tells the fictional story of the Guillet family, Robert, wife Ruth, son Roberto, daughter Sarah, and son Lucas who are Huguenot ( Protestant followers of John Calvin) living in Paris during the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) by Louis XIV the Sun King. This edict removes the right to worship their faith and gives the vicious dragonnades (soldier missionaries) the right to move in and persecute them in their own home. The family takes drastic action to survive and help others. Their daughter Sarah remains in Paris to look after the family's wealth and business interests by converting and marrying a Catholic. While her parents prepare to flee, she courts 3 prospective husbands and marries. Meanwhile one rejected suitor becomes obsessed with her and makes her life unbearable. The rest of the Guillet family bid their daughter farewell and begin their perilous journey to England. Family members face immense challenges including shipwreck, sexual assault, settling into a new country, starting a new business, indentured servitude, smuggling and fire. They meet their challenges despite all odds with close calls of capture by soldiers and tax collectors. For many of us, the Guillet are our ancestors. Although the characters are devout, this is not a book directed at a Christian audience. Instead, it is a story of courage and leadership faced by the people first described as refugees, especially the female members of the family. Light-hearted scenes include attending a ball at a grand house located on the Seine, a soiree at Versailles to meet the King and Madame Maintenon, a rescue at sea, smuggling on the Island of Jersey and interaction with a gang of ruffians in London.
Bound by Honor (Book 1 in the Legacy of Love Series) by Hoarder_of_books

"Bound by Honor" launches the Legacy of Love series in the tumultuous year of 1453, as the Hundred Years' War draws to its bitter close. Lady Isolde de Valcourt lives a life carefully measured by duty and honor, bound to her politically ambitious husband, Lord Edwin, in a marriage arranged for power rather than love. Her quiet acceptance of her fate is shattered when Sir Lucien Beaumont returns from the battlefields of Aquitaine, carrying both physical scars and the memory of a passion they once shared. As England's grip on France crumbles and the winds of war howl through castle corridors, Isolde finds herself caught between her sworn obligations and the undeniable pull of a love she thought long buried. Sir Lucien, though injured in body, remains unshaken in his devotion to both his country and the woman he has never stopped loving. Their forbidden romance blooms like a rose among thorns, each stolen moment weighted with the price of discovery. Against the backdrop of England's darkest hour, as territory and influence slip through noble fingers like sand, Isolde must make an impossible choice: remain faithful to her vows and title, or risk everything for a chance at true love. Set in a world where alliances shift like battlefields and hearts wage wars of their own, "Bound by Honor" weaves a tale of passion, duty, and the courage required to defy the bonds of convention. As the first installment in the Legacy of Love series, it sets in motion an epic saga spanning centuries, where the eternal struggle between duty and desire shapes the destinies of generations to come.
