Unafraid

There was a sheet of paper that was face down on the desk in front of me and a shiny, black pen. We were seated in a large marble hall, spaced out evenly. The short man cleared his throat at the front of the room, and told us to start writing. There was a shuffle as everyone turned over the paper in front of them, but no one talked. I looked down at mine and began writing.

Halfway through, I looked up to see everyone's heads bent down and studying their paper. I might spend the rest of my career with one of these people, I thought, scanning the faces. I might hate them or love them. Who knows?
