Cat perceives Phil Lester is a lucid dreamer, and in this way he meets Dan. They spend all of their time together when Phil is asleep and eventually Phil begins to believe Dan is real. He refuses to believe that Dan is blatantly a figment of his imagination and slowly drifts himself to the brink of insanity.
Well, at least from Cats point of view. But, that's just a theory.

They move in together as adults, and live a harmonious life. Dan thinks everything is perfect, but he doesn't know that Phil's mental health has taken a turn for the worse.
