It's year 3587. The government scientists designed a system that tied two specific people together as one soul. The Scientists, called Skids, received this idea from an old diagram of the Vitruvian Man. The Vitruvian Man was separated from his soulmate and put on opposite sides of the world. The Skids' experiment was to see if the two mates would find their way back to each other eventually. They did. However, some soulmates aren't exactly the best fits. Murphy DeRosse lives in one of those unfortunate families. His mother hides behind a facade of happiness while she takes pills every night to ease the pain. His father drinks is life away because his soulmate didn't work out like he wanted it too. Murphy spends his time following in his dad's footsteps, drinking at local bars and getting involved with girls who are already mated. The one rule for the Skids' creation was this: Do not have any sort of romantic relationship with anyone who isn't your soulmate. The consequence for not following this rule is fatal. For every person you have relations with who isn't your soulmate, a part of your soul is ripped out. Murphy's soul is almost completely gone. His soulmate's pure soul can fix him. She is the only pure soul left in the world. With his disbelief that the system can work, and the danger that his mate brings, a lot of trouble is coming their way. Maeve Calvin is the Apex. Her parents have a perfect marriage. They get along in peace and happiness. She has never seen a pair of soulmates that didn't get along and she can't wait for hers to come. The only problem is she is dangerously close to being discovered by the Skids, dangerously close to changing the world as they know it, and dangerously close to changing Murphy's life forever. Only few understand the severity of their situation, only few know about Maeve and Calvin's type of situation, the few who do are Recondite. The rest are goners. *detailed description inside*

❖2021 Watty Awards Shortlist❖ Kevin was just a normal 10 year old kid until he saw a woman vanish right before his eyes. This made Kevin just a little bit different. He paid more attention to people now. Little did he know that this little difference would kill him the next time he encountered another alien about to return home. It would tear him apart, cell by cell, until he was unmade. His mind being transported away. --- So distantly far away there is a race that advanced to the point where they built dyson spheres to house their civilizations. In their continual expansion, they seeded galaxies with pods and connection satellites. Over time they upgraded their dyson spheres into matryoshka brain Cores. Imagine a computer powered by a star. Citizens of Cores no longer age once they upload their minds into the virtual living system of the Core. While they didn't age, most still choose to cycle through life and death though at a different scale of time compared to our lives. Citizens can visit other planets and live there as if they were on a "vacation". Mercury is Earth's hub connected to the closest Core and Earth is a remote vacation spot for wealthy citizens. When the main character was 10 he witnessed a citizen returning to the Core. The story continues 10 odd years later when he again witnesses a similar situation unfolding and manages to touch the person returning to the Core. This causes him to be swept up in the transfer as well and for his mind to join as a "Guest" user of the Core. As a Guest he has limited powers, a starting balance of zero cr or Citizen credits, and no idea how he can get home. He is the first human to ever become a Guest of a Core. Where money itself is the highest form of their science.
