Ria Eldrest is a nomadic artisan who is one of six hundred humans allowed safe passage into the kingdom of Kaval, the only city in the world ruled by a vampire aristocracy. After a fated meeting with the youngest princess of Kaval, Ria is thrown into a contest orchestrated by the king to find a new blood-child. With nine other humans as her rivals, Ria is coupled with her newfound vampiress friend, Talia, to face the five challenges that, if completed, will allow her to win a seat in the Court of vampires. But not all is peaceful in Kaval. 

A plot to destroy the peace that the Court has so painstakingly crafted rises in the midsts of the festivities. Only Ria, a human with the rare ability to resist vampiric magic, can ever hope to solve the mystery and save her new home.
