Maverik Collins made a wish one humid night.

She dreams of becoming a surfer; to ride the tallest waves and to carve the longest barrel her island has to offer. Despite the countless hours spent daydreaming of herself in the waves, there's just one problem.

She's terrified of the water.

Unable to overcome her fear of the ocean, Maverik is at a crossroads. Her mother is pushing for her to tryout for the local surfing team, and unbeknownst to her, Maverik hasn't set so much as a foot into the water for years. Wanting to please her mother and fufill her dream of becoming a surfer, she makes a wish. To conquer her phobia and get on that board.

Little could Maverik predict, her wish is granted in the form of a boy, washed up on shore. A boy who's skin is peppered with scales and commands the sea. Maverik begins to learn that there is more to the local legends than she thought, and that there is much more to this mysterious boy than his hard exterior and cold green eyes.

"I need a surf board, please." The voice was so quiet and musical that, for a second at least, I couldn't register the order. I looked up slowly, dragging out the moment that my eyes could rest on his. "Sorry?" "A surfboard." l couldn't comprehend this relatively straightforward command. I was so sidetracked by his face. It was long, slender; dotted with freckles and the colour of fresh caramel. The cheekbones stood out prominently from his face, and his jaw was so deep set that it appeared as if he was permanently grinding his teeth. The boy's eyes were hard, but soft somehow; the exact shade of burnt sugar, and they bored into mine questioningly, surprised, as if he were completely unaware of his beauty. I doubted that very much. I had just torn my eyes away from his hair: blonde, curly and tousled, falling over his eyes perfectly, when he coughed. "Hello any day soon?" His voice was deep and scratchy now, and it was directed right towards me. Still dazed, I reached over for the clipboard with all the rentals. "Okay, in my defence, I just started working here." He laughed, and it was so attractive that I got the heart-in-throat feeling I had only experienced with Oscar before. The boy shifted from foot to foot as I surveyed the rest of his appearance: white shirt, shorts, and an earring just poking it's way out from a curl in his hair. He fetched the surfboard and put it on the counter. The money was suddenly thrust in my direction. "Maverick." he said, not quite meeting my gaze. "Reece." I returned. My Best Friend Is A Mermaid

23 parts Complete

Akira is an orphan who lives with her best friend, Lucas. Her parents died when she was 8 years old so Lucas's parents took her and cared for her. She was half human and half mermaid. She had the ability to exist in both forms but it comes with a cost. "Lucas, stop it! Don't let that water touch me!" I yelled, running maniacally away from my best friend who was holding a hose, trying to completely drench me in water. I couldn't let water touch me, not when I'm not wearing my protector ring. "Why are you so scared of the water?" Lucas chuckled. Oh Lucas, I wish I could tell you but I can't trust anyone with this secret, not even my best friend. --- Hope you enjoy the story. I don't know everything about mermaids but I hope this story's gonna make some sense and I hope it isn't gonna be cliché cause it's just a pigment of my imagination.
