Maverik Collins made a wish one humid night.

She dreams of becoming a surfer; to ride the tallest waves and to carve the longest barrel her island has to offer. Despite the countless hours spent daydreaming of herself in the waves, there's just one problem.

She's terrified of the water.

Unable to overcome her fear of the ocean, Maverik is at a crossroads. Her mother is pushing for her to tryout for the local surfing team, and unbeknownst to her, Maverik hasn't set so much as a foot into the water for years. Wanting to please her mother and fufill her dream of becoming a surfer, she makes a wish. To conquer her phobia and get on that board.

Little could Maverik predict, her wish is granted in the form of a boy, washed up on shore. A boy who's skin is peppered with scales and commands the sea. Maverik begins to learn that there is more to the local legends than she thought, and that there is much more to this mysterious boy than his hard exterior and cold green eyes.

-- COMPLETED AND EDITING -- Nicole Shipton c. 2013 Teenage Michaela was a simple girl with an everyday life living in sunny California, excited about her sixteenth birthday party; a chance to get away from her strict parents for just a few hours. The quick surf Michaela and her sister Jess went on before the guests were due to arrive was meant to relax her, but to say it did the opposite would be an understatement. That surf turned Michaela's life around. Within a week, she had sprouted a tail, along with her sister. Michaela's parents weren't much help, leaving her and Jess to sort through the mess alone. When their mother and father finally took them to their home in the ocean, the two girls were kidnapped. One of the last remaining sea witches, a malicious woman named Krella, brought Michaela, Jess, and two other merpeople to the small town of Rocksworth. There, they were forced to do unmentionable and traumatizing things. Michaela doesn't know if she'll ever return to the coral castle she so briefly saw her parents call home, and if she does, what kind of life might that be?
