I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes as I wandered downstairs, lackluster as always.

"So, Shadow? Did you get your mark?" Two smiling faces were in front of me-my parents. But their eyes betrayed the smile almost immediately. I recognized the wide, sad look of despair, and the wild, frantic look of desperateness.

"Mark?" I muttered, still not fully registering what today was. My sixteenth birthday-and my last chance to BE marked. With my one, my only, my soulmate.

Shawn ("Shadow") Gray lives a normal life, in world where the unneeded extra emotion of 'love' has been eliminated.

Instead, a Mark appears on some part of your body, showing your soulmate, who you were destined to be with. The Mark could be anything, from a simple flower, to an intricate design. But you know who it is, no matter how vague it might be.

The Mark appears from anytime from your 12th birthday to your 16th, showing who you would be married to once you turn 20.
