They had played together as children.
He had big dreams of ruling the continent, she had big hopes of running away and escaping imprisonment. It was only logical that they would no longer get along after years of being seperated. A lot had happened, and both had new ambitions, but it wouldn't be long before they both realized they would eventually cross paths and no longer fight for the same side.
She was strong, but she was also weak. He had a lot to learn if he wanted to regain her trust.
They both still have a lot of growing up to do.

Separated, Zuko and Song Lee do their best to cope with the others' absence as they struggle to figure out what to do with their lives. - The sword slashed out, cutting off some of the fabric of his sleeve, but he dodged to the best of his ability, fire in his hands- And then he realized all at once who it was he was fighting. "Wait," he said, but she didn't. She surged forward, and he caught sight of her eyes, and he was terrified, because she wasn't going to stop. He stopped bending and let the fire go out, but he didn't dodge the next time she came at him. Instead, she used all of her strength to charge into him and push him to the ground. Zuko closed his eyes on instinct, but the grass and the moss was soft beneath his head. Song Lee was sitting on his stomach, her knees pinning his arms down, no doubt a technique she had learned from Master Piandao. Her eyes were brighter than he had ever seen them, bright with anger. In that moment, absurdly, he was reminded that this was the first time he had seen her in months. Her hair was a little longer, longer than his but somehow even more wild, and his eyes were drawn back to her sword, which was gripped in both of her hands as she stared down at him. "Song Lee," he said. "Don't call me that," she snarled, and any other words died on his lips. She hated him. Of course she did. Who wouldn't? In that moment, he gave up. Heiza of the Yuyan Archers was trained to be the best of the best. Her father taught her everything she knew so she could protect herself against people. The only thing was that she couldn't actually be apart of the Yuyan Archers because she was a woman. That's where her other job came in to play. Since she was always stuck at home, she decided to try her hand at stealing. Her first few jobs were simple and easy, but she slowly grew to prominence. She had loyal customers who came to her for anything she stole. This was her biggest job yet. One of her loyal customers informed her about something so expensive - so protected - in the Fire Nation Royal Palace. He was willing to pay for it if she could get it for him. If she went through with it, she would be richer than the Earth King - maybe richer than the Fire Lord himself. It was a good thing she was friends with the Fire Nation princess. Heiza decided it was time to catch up with her old friends as a cover for her. If they knew that she was there to steal the royal set of bow and arrows that encased the royal family jewels, she would be dead. What Heiza didn't expect was finding out that Zuko - the Banished Prince - was back and ready to be welcomed at the Palace again. She hadn't planned on him being there at all. But maybe it was all for the better. She could use him in her plan on stealing the bow and arrows. Things seemed to be going well until they all blew up in her face.
