He seems very careless and broken-hearted until later in the story he opens up to Nixxi about his past. The dark past brought up memories of the soon-to-be widowed Nixxi and her husband Bradly. Bradly, the father of two, sadly passed to a tumor in his lungs, suffocating him, and leaving behind his newly widowed and pregnant wife.
