In mid-70's London, a sweet Catholic schoolgirl misfit named Annalisa meets Ollie and Kenny, two working class British teens, in a record shop, where they discover a shared love of David Bowie and reggae music. As they hang out in Ollie's bedroom listening to records, the boys vie for Annalisa's affection, and a life-long love triangle develops. Kenny wins Annalisa as his new girlfriend with his sincerity and talent. Cocky, delinquent, yet inwardly sensitive, Ollie's ego is bruised, and he plots to win Annalisa's over. When Ollie becomes singer in a new band, Annalisa secretly becomes obsessed with him, constantly hearing his voice in her head. At home, Annalisa's ultra-religious mother punishes her for listening to punk music. When Annalisa defies her, she's sent to a mental asylum. She escapes and flees to Ollie's concert, where she meets up with Kenny and their friend Syd. Backstage after the show, Annalisa gives Ollie, now Ollie Dreadful, flowers she retrieved from a dustbin at the asylum. She's invited by Ollie to spend the night at his squat, where they stay up talking about their dreams and bond over their "madness". He recites lyrics from a new song - "we're the flowers in the dustbin" - and tells Anna she was the inspiration. The next morning they're joined by Kenny, Syd, and their friend Wobbie. Ollie encourages Anna to become a street musician to make a living, and gives her his violin as a gift. Kenny invites Anna to live in his squat, where he teaches her how to play Ollie's violin. At the squat, Kenny rehearses with his new band and Anna rehearses with hers, The X-Girls. Anna's on-again, off-again relationship with Kenny is threatened by her obsession with Ollie. Ollie's rise to fame tears them apart. Will old flames rekindle when they're reunited years later by fate?
