Red Scarclyf is a former slave who now attends the Cllerilus Empire's military academy due to his ability to summon spirits, a type of supernatural power. The ability is rare and thus highly prized. Red is an amnesiac that frequently has frightening dreams. The night before the graduation exam, Red and his only friend, Ryuuji, vow they will never abandon each other.

The next day, Red overhears people talking about him. Turning back to find out where it is coming from, he suddenly realizes that the speaker, Chief of Staff Nakame, is the person who killed the familiar man in his dreams: his father, the king of the destroyed Vessailus Kingdom. Red is caught eavesdropping and tries to attack Nakame but is quickly brought down by one of his subordinates and sent to prison. Ryuuji comes to help him escape, only to find that Red has managed to fight past the guards by himself.

The two flee the building but eventually separated because of Ryuuji’s sudden change of heart. Three bishops in the nearby 1st District discover the injured Red and take him to a nearby church to recuperate, where he is protected because of the 1st District's law of sanctuary.

In due time, it is discovered that Red carries the Eye of Uriel, a powerful talisman for which his home country was destroyed. This fact, as well as a fateful reunion, catapults Red into a quest for revenge against the Cllerilus Empire and for knowledge about his past. At the same time, his status as the bearer of the Eye of Uriel throws him into the long-standing conflict between the evil Erebus and his enemies, the 7 Guardians.All Rights Reserved
