Earnest "Ernie" Wallace is an African american teenager. She isn't what you would call acceptable in the small town of Alexandria, in fact, no black person is. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia in the year 1971, Virginia's most trying time. And now that the white people's school is integrating, life for many black people gets harder. Especially if you're a girl and black, and want to join the football team during your senior year along with your twin brother. And things get even more complicated if you fall in love with a white boy, whose dad has absolutely no tolerance for blacks, at all.
