Eleven year old Zero is training to become a hunter under the guidance of Yagari. But soon after fifteen year old Kaito is now training with him because of his master's injuries in a battle. 

Zero notices that something is not quite right with him and wonders about him. They get put on an exercise to kill their first Level E who cuts and drinks Zeros blood and damages Kaito. Zero is told by Kaito to run for his life while he distracted the Level E since its a hunter rule 'If you get injured or cut get out of there and run for it.
