Nick, Richland High School's resident player, just got friend zoned. Nick has liked Lainy for 8 years, since he was 10 and she was 9, they met at chess club meet in elementary school. Lainy is still a nerd, but Nick moved on from that faze long ago. They're still friends, even though they're at total ends of the high school food chain. Nick eventually tells Lainy he likes her, maybe even loves her. Lainy freaks out and doesn't wanna be played by her player of a best friend, so she rejects him and Nick enters the friend zone, every guy's hell.
