This tale is Cinderella... with a twist. Cindy Filips has been slaving away for her stepmother Sylvia since her father left 10 years ago. She works day after day and one day gets fed up with her working conditions so she leaves. Along the way, she runs into another runaway named Kristopher. This is the story of their journey and the events upon it.
In a world without fairy godmothers and magical shoes, Cinderella got tired of waiting for them.

Noah looked at me for a second before moving closer. I sucked the card off his lips but it faltered and fell to the ground. A second later I felt a pair of lips on mine. The Story Behind the Slipper
We all know the classic story of a girl who lost her glass slipper running away from her dreams, and racing back to her sad reality of being a peasant maid for her own step-mother and step-sisters, the only family she has left. Yes, this is a story based on none other than the character of Cinderella. However...this rendition of telling the tale is quite different. This quick-read is all written in the form of haikus; a form of poetry that is written in a 5/7/5 syllable count. In this story, you learn about the lives these characters really lived behind the scenes of the happily ever after that we all know to be. You'll discover rich amounts of character development from minor characters and learn major mic-drops about the major characters. I hope you enjoy reading and visualizing the lives of various characters and what they may have been thinking throughout this story! In this retelling of a classic tale, Mariette struggles through life with a stepmother that hates her. When she is whisked away at the prince's ball, she begins to believe that her life is going to change-that is until the prince discovers that her slipper is a perfect fit for her stepsister. Fighting the urge to confess her secret, Mariette and her family move into the prince's castle, where old friends-and fiancés-are reunited. Note on Setting: This takes place in a kind of fictional France (hence many of the names, though they speak English). Postscript: "Lady" is a title given to woman married to a man with an estate, much like "Queen" is given to a woman married to a man with a castle. "Mistress" is given to a woman yet to inherit an estate, though of high-class breed (one would not refer to a beggar or maid as 'Mistress'). This is just your basic, average Cinderella story...with a few notable exceptions: (1) It takes place in the fractured remains of the US, long after a meteor strike wiped out most of human civilization. (2) The wicked step-sisters are not so wicked. Everyone has their demons, evil step-mother notwithstanding, right? (3) Cinderella struggles with depression and is pregnant, with no hope of seeing her baby's daddy ever again. (4) And, oh yeah, Prince Charming actually has a personality.
