"Mommy why can't I play with the other kids?"

"People are bad, Violet. People hurt you. People are no good. Do you understand?"

"Yes mommy."

"People will lie. People will cheat. Don't trust anyone."

"Yes mommy."

I look towards the other children playing with a ball. I watched silently until I saw a little boy fall and hurt his knee. I watched as he cried and cried while the other kids ran away. I felt my mom stroke my head.

"See, Violet. You will always get hurt. No matter what."

I looked towards mommy. She was watching the little boy on the ground. She had a blank expression. But something in her eyes made me a little scared. 

"Promise me, Violet. Promise to never trust in people."

"But mommy-"

"Promise me, Violet."

"I promise."
