'My name is Velna, pronounced Vahlna. It means ‘female devil’ which I guess is ironic since I am the most religious person you will probably ever meet. But you can call me Vel. I’m 17 years old. My mother left me on the doorstep of Hailsham Baptist Church after she gave birth to me and I have no idea who my father is. Not that I care. The pastor at the church gave me to the perfect family; Hardworking parents, loving siblings, all topped with a white picket fence. I grew up a Catholic and I attend church every Sunday. I go to Hailsham Community College and am top in my year. Everyone thinks I’m a nerd but I barely even have to try.
