He certainly doesn't expect the world's best assassin to be in his apartment plotting somebody's murder when he gets home from a holiday. Vic Fuentes - the assassin in question - does not expect him to come home early. How the fuck is he supposed to kill this bad guy now? Especially with such a cute distraction running around because it hasn't seen a gun before - let alone nine.
