Addym Darwood is the last of his house. Bannermen to the Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion, they were wiped out and their lands sold in the aftermath of the war. His father and older brother are both dead, leaving him an orphan and heir to the meager lands granted to his father by Robert during a period of armistice before an attempted coup. Now Addym, 13 years of age, resides under the care of Lord Darren Duldun, a friend of his father's, and serves as his squire.

Gemma Duldun is the eldest of Lord Duldun's daughters, and the heir to their house name and titles. She is expected to marry, of course, so that the inheritance may go to her husband. With no brothers to defend her and her sisters, she has become just as handy with a sword as she is at a dinner table, with the help of her best friend Addym Darwood, her father's ward and squire. They have practically grown up together, partners in crime, and she hopes to help him achieve his dream of rebuilding his house and taking back his lands.

What neither of them realize is how epic and dangerous this journey will be, what they will do, where they will go, who they will meet, and what rifts will be caused as a result of their daring crusade.
