Cordelia Stark is the niece of one of the wealthiest merchants in New York. Frederick Hoeck is one of the greatest landholders of the Colonies. He was granted 52,000 acres of land in the New Netherlands, which later became New York and New Jersey under English control. He has a soft spot for Cordelia and has decided in her best interest to take her to the Upper Mills section, also known as the Hoeck Manor, so that she can run the grist mill and do its bookkeeping, a task that leaves Cordelia with large boots to fill. Her uncle has big plans for her and it does not involve becoming a socialite in New York City like her peers.

Things are going great for Cordelia at the Manor. She learns to enjoy the routine of the mill and the responsibility it takes in running the trading site. Her uncle's business is going well, that is until the American Colonies want to become independent of Britain and its outlandish taxes. British forces land in the Colonies, ransacking Patriot towns and cutting off supplies so that the English Crown can regain control of its disobedient child, America.

This story is loosely based on the Philipseburg Manor, its gristmill, and family.
