The last time Ghost is seen he is on a mission to recover Intel to help bring down Makarov. While extracting the Intel Ghost and Roach are ambushed, Roach is wounded but Ghost gets Roach to the safety of General Shepherd's helicopter where he then shoots Roach and Ghost. The two are then dragged to a pit and burned. Both are considered dead, until now.
