Those were Amandas mothers words to her and her little brother Robby when they questioned her on why no one else lived in their little valley. The words hurt, but they were true. 

Ann had never loved that controlling scientist of a father, and seeing that the world she lived in was in ruins; she was forced to return after threatening to shoot him, and start a family.

Whether she regrets it is something she mulls over every night.
