Unlike most fifteen year olds who spent their last few days before the outbreak at school, Josephine was in Juvenile Detention for drug possession. The doctor, Candice Reed at the facility also happened to be a scientist, and when she got word that the world went to hell, she wanted to find a cure. She spent the first week of the outbreak injecting a mix of homemade vaccines into unwilling, underage criminals.
After seventeen fails, and seventeen dead teens, Dr. Reed had injected Josephine. Josephine was the only one who lived after being injected, so Dr. Reed thought she perfected the serum and injected herself. Reed died a few minutes after. Josephine, who was not aware of what was really going on outside of the facility, stole Reeds keys and escaped.
Over the years, Josephine watched many of the people she stayed with be bitten and turn. She never understood why, but the dead rarely went near her, and when they did, all they would do is stare. She knew that the injection probably had something to do with it, but she kept it to herself, unsure of what others would do if they knew.

[amazing plot to @glberts]
A Maybank and A Cameron? It's almost like a modern Romeo and Juliet. It's forbidden for them to be together. Could be the end of the world.
The stolen glances, the hidden feelings, the unspoken words, the secret meetings and the obvious hatred towards each other followed by constant conflicts and some hidden past that threatened them but there are always invisible strings tied and pulling them together no matter how hard the tides trying to pull and part them away from each other.
