Britain declares war with Germany. Alice Hardwick, a poor farmer's daughter from Northumbria, soon finds herself swept up in the chaos of war. When a letter to her cousin get's mixed up in the post, she soon starts writing to a mysterious officer in the army, and falling for him. Destiny brought them together, but the odds are against them and their circumstances will drive them apart.

1914; war has broken out across Europe. In the muddied trenches of France, an unlikely bond develops between a soldier and his captain that threatens the stability of their world.
