~"My whole life, you were a question mark."~ Every rose has its thorn; and Vic feels like he's full of thorns. With high school graduation behind him and an impressive set of grades under his belt, Vic sets about pursuing his dream of attending a top arts college - by working in Rachel's, a coffee shop not too far from home, where he's living for his gap year and keeping things tiding over. Because it was never going to be as easy as going to college - there was always the matter of money, and the matter of his father's mind and the matter of his brother's illness to keep him grounded at home. And as much as he loves his family, acting the grownup at the age of nineteen when he's only just begun to earn a living wage isn't particularly fun. And then, by way of a lazy universe and a curiously convenient coincidence, an old classmate Vic never had the chance to know but who always had bird seed in his pocket turns up at the coffee shop. And things start to change. The story Vic and Jaime write out together twists in ways they didn't plan for in their wildest dreams and worst nightmares. A messy beginning; a disastrous middle; an okay but not perfect finish.
