When Clara Burton, a tough-as-nails twenty-something stuck in a boring job, is attacked by a lycan, all she wants to do is go home and binge-watch TV. Instead, she is thrust into a magical world held together by a fragile truce that is being eroded from within by petty squabbles and power plays.

As more and more attacks are reported across the country, war looks inevitable, threatening a conflict that would spill over into the mundane world and cause untold damage.

Now, with her new friend Kendra - a bubbly aetherwitch and all-round bad-ass - Clara must discover the truth of her heritage and avoid the dangers of a world she was born for. Because now the protection her mother had placed over her is broken all manner of creatures want to taste her power, and they aren't going to stop until they do.

Meanwhile, hundreds of witches gather at the Witches' Conference in London to decide their new leader. They come from every corner of the country, almost every coven gathered to cast their vote. A tragic gas explosion kills all attendees and their leader, Mother Sylvia. But when her protégée Eliza Sparks is almost killed in an attack upon her coven it is clear that someone - or something - is working to destroy the Witch Court.

Soon, the link between both threads becomes clear as more attacks follow and the puppeteer working behind the scenes moves towards his ultimate goal: to open the Gates of Infernus and release the demons trapped there. With time running out, Clara, Kendra and Eliza must fight to keep the gates closed and the world - mundane and magical - safe.
