There are representatives for the Sandman and Bogeyman all around the world; their little "workers", per se. The Father of Dreams and the Father of Nightmares can't do everything by themselves, after all.

Aileen and Rajani are the representatives of the American division. Aileen knows she shouldn't be so drawn to Rajani; she represents everything Aileen is opposed to. However, she can't help but feel so drawn to her counterpart. 

Rajani has been under the rule of the Bogeyman for a couple millennia; she knows that working for the Bogeyman was a tedious task, but she figures it's worth it. She always expected that she'd have to work with one of Sandman's subjects; it was how things worked in their world. What she didn't expect, however, was that her partner would be the one she'd fall in love with.

This wasn't at all what either had planned when they'd started working together.
