Bertholdt doesn't really know what life is. He's come to that conclusion after Reiner, his childhood friend and now husband, began his affair months back. Inseparable as children, smitten as adults, and now broken as newlyweds. However, Bertholdt won't leave. Yes, it hurts unbearably. Yes, he can barely trust anyone anymore. And yes, any sane person would have left ages ago. But he couldn't, he won't, not when his entire life rests in the palm of the man he thinks he still loves. Maybe Bertholdt doesn't really know what love is. Reiner's sorry. He's a sorry excuse for a husband, he's a sorry excuse for a human being, and he's just so sorry. That's all he's ever been able to do. Apologize and try to hold his world order together for just a little longer. If it weren't for forces outside of his control, if it weren't for people he couldn't control, then it wouldn't have come to this. But that's a terrible excuse, and guilty people shouldn't give excuses. So all he can do is hang his head and apologize.
