Ree didn't see the other car slam into hers-she was too busy fighting tears. Submerged in water, she pries free and finds herself far from the river her car had spiraled into, and face to face with - of all inconceivable things - pirates.

By all means, Nela knew it was outrageously impossible for her elevator to take a Hollywood plunge, but when she recovers from the unlikely impact, she finds herself in a crater surrounded by a forest hungering for her memories. Just as outrageously impossible is one of her rescuers, who takes her onto his back and leaps into literal flight to escape.

Best friends Ree and Nela discover each other in a world as magically enticing as it is deadly. Parties with unlikely drinks, jobs of Nightmare hunting, and a societal system that crushes any such words as "binary". For the first times in their lives, they have freedom.

But every light casts a shadow, and darkest are the shadows Ree and Nela cast - or used to cast. Their arrival brings danger the world has never seen before, and it begins when the forest comes alive and makes away with residents of the Village of the Lost. It doesn't stop with the forest: it's the ocean, the sky, and the very ground beneath their feet. All of it comes alive, and no one can explain why-perhaps save the sea monster.

Ree and Nela are foreigners, but they find themselves able to master the world's greatest shadows, and so it's up to them with a team of the princess of the Village of the Remembered, the boy who flies, the boy who fights, and the pirate captain, to solve the mysterious upheaval of the world.

They don't know, however, if they can conquer the darkest shadows of all.
