"A half-ghost named after a toilet. A god (who also doubles as an infuriating jackass - not literally, unfortunately). A pendant. A stone. And an evil ex-pharaoh named Ay. And cats. Bloody, bloody cats." All Latrina Vomere wanted to do was kill that pesky creature. And then get on with her biology textbook and figure out just how the crap her ghost of a mother ever managed to conceive her. And then read a little Latin, maybe find out why her father decided to name her after a toilet (as if that last name of hers wasn't already enough!), and then stare at her peridot necklace for another while, perhaps. Although why, she honestly has no idea. It's not as if it's that pretty anyway. And then that... insect just had to waltz so conceitedly into her life. So now she's stuck with an infuriating jackass, a miser of a guardian, and a crazy Egyptian pharaoh (who was supposed to be long dead, dammit!) that wants to turn Earth into The Amazing Cat Planet of Ay. And that necklace of hers? It might just be the key to saving them all.

Faline Collins has never fit in. The only people she remotely gets along with is her family and her best friend Bertie. But Faline's life begins to look up when she finds an enchanting necklace: an amber stone with an ancient design on it, all hanging on a silky black ribbon. The gift inspires Faline to search for her biological parents. With only her necklace and a postcard, Faline and her best friend Bertie take off on a trip to England, where Faline believes she may have been born. So away they go, eager to explore England, but also to see if they can find more clues leading up to Faline's very mysterious past. But Faline's adventure abroad takes a strange turn when she runs into a young man, scar-faced Brent, who takes a sudden interest in her necklace. Things get weirder yet when just few nights later, Faline is attacked by an other-worldly shadow creature and saved by an over-sized black cat. According to some locals who believe her wild tale, she was saved by the infamous Black Beast of Exmoor. As she tries to find out more about the elusive beast, she discovers there is a dark magic behind the legend and it is more than just local folklore. And what's more, her past has a big part of it, and Faline finds that she may be the answer to the age old war of good and evil, of light versus darkness.
