Ever since Eragon Shadeslayer and Saphira Bjartskular defeated the mad King Galbatorix 53 years ago, there has been peace in the land of Alagaësia. Dragon eggs have been ferried around to all the races of the land, save those who have no interest in them. Thus a new generation of Riders were born and trained under the direction of Saphira and her mighty Rider.

Miriam, a farm girl from the village of Daret has heard these tales many times, but she believes she has no part in momentous history and heroic stories. So Miri is absolutely shocked when a dragon egg hatches for her. She doesn't have any idea how she, of all people, could be a Rider. Worse, she has no inkling of how she can leave life in Daret, more particularly her family, behind.

Despite her misgivings about being a Rider, Miri finds herself embroiled deeply in a catastrophe that could mean the end of life in Alagaesia as she knows it. Can she save her world? It seems unlikely with the growing threat...
