You never think anything bad can happen until it happens to you. It’s like you’re in a bubble. You hear of all the tragedies and stories, but it always seems surreal. You never think that you’ll be the one shot in the chest, crushed under the metal of a car, vanished in the night never to be heard of again. It’s never crossed your mind that one day it might be your name headlining the newspaper articles and TV screens. It’s simply impossible. Nothing could ever go wrong in your life. Everything’s fine. What could possibly happen?
So when the bubble finally pops, it’s like an unbearable weight is crushing down on your shoulders. Your world is spinning, and even then it still doesn’t seem like this life could be reality. You have to keep pinching yourself to remind you that this is your life now. You have to deal with the grief; forever there, forever grinding the bones on your shoulder to bits, until there is nothing left but pain.
That’s how I felt the day my sister was diagnosed with cancer.
