Footsteps echoed in the ghostly cold and empty corridor. It came to halt at the entrance of a room.

"You called for me, sir? " a voice broke the silence of the vast richly furnished room, receiving attention from the man sitting on the huge carved mahogany chair, facing away from the door . "The file is on the table ." The person voiced out placing file with the royal Tsuchikami symbol. "Don't let me down, Stretton. " The man seated on the chair spoke in his loving voice. "Kingdom of Tsuchikami should be the best and powerful Kingdom of Aether. " A smirk plastered on his face hearing a retreating footsteps.

[ magic, romance and madness. ] Everyone knew that a romance between a guardian and their protégé always ended in tragedy - yet they risked it. One day, I read that in real-life fairy tales, the princess sometimes needs to befriend the dragon and kill the prince, perhaps not to the most extreme extent, considering the prince's utility. (*Wink*). Twenty years had passed since the demise of the last living descendant bearing the bloodline of a potent family within the mystical realm. Individuals who possessed magic more formidable than anyone could have fathomed and that very magic could be pilfered if they were to meet an untimely end-a rumour ignited like wildfire. Word began to spread about the sole surviving member of the Lysion family, the last vestige of a lineage renowned for their blessings from the gods (or, as some argue, their curses), once no more than bedtime tales for children. Two decades earlier, a game of hide and seek unfolded that culminated in the death of the final Lysion at the hands of Oldo Blake, a formidable figure in the annals of history. Or so the story goes. An obscure girl. A concealed secret. A relentless pursuit. With a motley crew of bewildering Other Siders on her trail and an absolute dearth of knowledge on how to harness her precious magic, Rosélina Johnson's life transformed from that of an inconspicuous university student to that of a fugitive in the mystic realm, utterly unprepared for what lay ahead.

'They pulled the chair across from me out and sat in it. The tavern carried on when the figure made themselves comfortable. My grip tightened on the hilt of the dagger. They pulled the hood of their cloak off and unclasped it. Their movements were relaxed and unhurried. I ran my eyes over him. He had strange black, swirling tattoos on his neck and long, pointed ears. His clothes were plain. I crossed my arms and sat back in my seat, keeping my eyes on his piercing midnight blue ones. He cocked an eyebrow. "Well?" I narrowed my eyes. "Well, what?" "What's your business here?" "I should be asking you that, considering you silenced a room by being in it." "Fair enough." He paused as the bartender brought another tankard over. "I'm looking for a travel companion." His voice was as deep as the shadows surrounding us. "You're an elf... Don't they prefer to travel on their own?" "Fae," he corrected as he pulled a pipe out of thin air. A black wisp of smoke surrounded his hand as he did so. "But yes, we do. I, however, have had enough of my thoughts being my only company." I nodded. "So?" He raised his eyebrows. I shook my head sadly. "This is something I need to do. Alone." "Alright." He looked a bit disappointed, which was odd, considering we had just met. ' What happens when you're going to kill the Unnamed One and meet a mysterious fae on your journey? Do you trust him, or leave him? And what do you do when you find out what he's been hiding? Iowyn Aedithas is on a quest to save her guild. A quest that could potentially be lethal for her. She's an awfully brave (some would say naive) human to be doing this. Demons have been attacking her guild, and she's had enough. She meets Evaris, the mysterious fae, on her journey and he becomes her travel companion. When they reach their destination, he reveals information that's previously been held close.

The Mystery at Trida Academy | Fantasmical 2023

13 parts Complete

Second place in the Fantasmical Story Competition. Alaina, a semi-reclusive elf with questionable fire magic, joins a mysterious stranger. Together, they must travel through twelve fantastical realms, defeating dangerous monsters in order to save her sister. Alaina grew up in the small village of Koh-i-noor with her parents and two sisters. Her oldest sister was the village beauty, and even though her family wasn't wealthy or connected, rumors of her elegance and grace traveled the countryside. She married a prince and moved to the capital. Then there's her younger sister, gifted in both earth and water magic; she's one of the most talented magic users in over a century. And Alaina? She's nothing like either of her sisters. She's got fire magic, but she's more likely to burn the house down than to light the hearth. But that doesn't bother Alaina - she's perfectly fine, even with unreliable magic. She lives in the small cottage her parents left her, along with her loyal, if somewhat yippy fox, Cinna, tending her garden and selling the sweetest strawberries that Koh-i-noor has ever seen. But when her sister sends a cryptic word that something's wrong at the Trida Academy, Alaina must abandon her solitary life to save her sister. Cover image by AndreasAux from Pixabay
