In their small town, everybody knew everybody.
"Did you see that girl over there?"
"That's Samantha."
"What about the boy with her?"
"That's Nate."
But not only did everyone know each other, but they judged one another, too.
"Look at that little white girl over there."
"She's building something in the mud."
"Why is there a black boy with her? Don't he know that white's and black's aren't supposed to play with one another?"
"Come to think of it, that looks like little Johnny with that white girl."
"Oh, his mama ain't gonna like it to know that Johnny was playing with a white girl."
And they would still judge each other.
"Say, is that Jenny playing with Johnny in the mud over there?"
"Stupid white girl! Doesn't she know that white's aren't supposed to mess with black's?"
Nate's skin was like chocolate, they said. Samantha's skin was like milk that came from a cow. The two weren't supposed to hang around one another. But they didn't listen.
