Dan Howell has always had the perfect life. A rich family, a great education, and good friends. But all of this gets turned around when Dan is kidnapped off the streets by three boys. They want revenge for things Dan's family did to their own families. As Dan spends more time with these three he learns that his family isn't as perfect as he thought. Dan also learns more about one of his captors, Phil Lester. He starts to feel things for Phil that he never has with anyone. But how can he feel this way for someone wanting to destroy his family? Dan gets tied up into bigger family situations than he knew existed and is left to decide, family or Phil?

Cloning is now a legal and regular practice globally. Poor people give their children to be cloned then get them returned. The clones are then raised to fight in war, and nothing more. They stay in camps, with little to no privacy. Dan and Phil are clones. They meet, fall in love, and are together through it all. Up until World War Three begins and clones are beginning to be drafted yet again. Phil gets drafted almost immediately, much to Dan's dismay.
