How do you solve a murder when you cannot reveal you are an undercover detective? The development of time travel undermined most traditional religions in the Solar System by proving there is no such thing as fate. But it left a void that had to be filled. Today, many people venerate science and evolution, but some worship time itself. In the rings of Saturn, one of the Solar System's greatest sporting events is approaching, providing the perfect cover for the secretive temporal cults to hold their annual inter-faith retreat. Members from every sect will meet to socialise, discuss their ideas and beliefs, and display their latest inventions, which can manipulate time in ways that should not be possible. Time-travelling police detective Erik Midgard is also attending in disguise, to gather intelligence on the cults for the Chronological Operations Agency. It is a risky and complicated assignment, made harder because the laws of time appear to be suddenly - and inexplicably - changing, which could have dire consequences for Erik himself. The last thing he needs is another murder to solve. Undercover in a small hotel, in a jurisdiction he is not meant to be in, with a killer among the guests who may be the most intelligent and cunning adversary he has ever faced, Erik must solve the case, and the mystery of his own origins, before it is too late. One way or another, Erik's time is almost up. The final volume of the Erik Midgard Case Files.

Who would want to kill a time-travelling librarian? Time-travelling police detective Erik Midgard thought he had changed his fate. But now he is burdened with new knowledge that suggests the future is more flexible than he thought. He might not have escaped his predicted destiny after all. To make things worse, he has another murder to solve. At the solar system's greatest university on the moon, a group of historians and their students are using time travel to recover the great lost libraries of ancient civilisations. Travelling back to times before these libraries were destroyed, they are secretly recording the contents of all the books and bringing the data safely back to the present. They have saved the entire collections of the libraries of Alexandria, Ctesiphon, Nalanda, the Serapeum, the House of Wisdom in Baghdad and the Mayan libraries of the Yucatan and have many more still to rescue. They have already learnt countless new facts about the civilisations that created these libraries and the project has so far been an unqualified success. But when the professor who founded the project is found dead, it very quickly becomes clear to Erik and his partner Mirabi that something else is going on. Newly promoted after their success at the Time Traveller's Ball, this should be a straightforward murder investigation. But the project's staff, students and security guards are all hiding more secrets than the libraries they have rescued contain, and at least one of them is prepared to kill to protect them. But as they search for answers, Erik starts to suspect that one of the secrets might just be a way to solve the unsolvable. And if it is, could it also be a way for him to save himself?

Sometimes the truth is just too terrible to ever be guessed... Readers' comments: 'Excellent story', 'gripping page-turner', 'marvellous read', 'great writing', 'simply remarkable', 'a fabulously emotional ride', 'wow', 'what a great book!', 'had me engaged right to the end' Wattys award-winning author (The Painted Altar, literary fiction 2020) When two British brothers are reported missing whilst on holiday in southern Italy, the local carabinieri turn to retired detective Jim Jacks for help. Still pained by a recent divorce, he has started a new life for himself as a small-scale wine producer. Along with commander Nuzzo, he will slowly unravel a mystery which is even darker than it had first seemed... Genre: murder mystery Length: 75,000 words (300 novel pages) Target audience: adult, fans of crime fiction, anyone who likes mysteries full of twists and which are populated by three-dimensional characters Extract: I stayed there at the holiday bungalow with Sarah and Olivia for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Would return again the following morning. An analyst would no doubt conclude that my actions weren't entirely selfless; that as a lonely old divorcee I found a nostalgic comfort in female company. And yes, this might have been part of it. But there was a very practical reason too for my more or less continued presence in the house. I just didn't want to leave them to themselves I suppose, was afraid of what might happen. Yes, the thing I remember most about that forty-eight hour period is the silence. There was something brooding to it. Something ominous, almost delicate, like if it cracked you feared it would explode. An edgy, precarious silence stretching on and on, minute after minute, hour after hour... About the author: I'm a 47-year-old English teacher who has lived in Italy for the last 15 years. I have two other novels on the site, The Painted Altar and Kill Who You Want
