18 year old, Alethea Qarson is a magical exceela, a type of mage or fairy with cat blood. But only she and her parents know. One day, at a nearby beach, Alethea encounters an elf-boy. He doesn't know it, and Alethea is going to make him know. They join a group of mages and the boy (Lael) soon begins to realize that he is one of them. Lael hasn't yet signed the tree bark for truly joining. And one day, a bug storm comes. The protector (leader) dies, and now Lael has to sign the bark NOW! It's either stay... or die...
