Illea has changed. It has been twenty years since the reign of Maxon and America Schreave came to an end, and time has not been kind. Equality between men and women has changed, making me far above women's status. It has gotten so bad, that it is now the law that all women shall only be seen in public if they are wearing a masquerade mask. It is punishable by death, should you refuse to wear one. At first, many women, young and old alike, revolted. But, they were "shut down," to put it lightly. The cold and distant King Christopher did the job, and made sure it never happened again. Everyone must obey his laws, or they shall face consequences. But, it's time for the king to step aside and give the throne to his eldest son, Prince Kallen.

Everyone was invited, and everyone went. The time spent in the palace was grand. That was until one of the guests went missing. A young woman was escorted from the ballroom and was never seen again. Spring returned for a short time, and then winter crashed back down upon the land. And another ball was held. People were skeptical and did not want to attend, but they had no choice. Yet another guest went missing, another woman. The parties continued annually. Everyone in the kingdom was forced to go and every year, another person was escorted away.
