Y'Keta needs a place to hide until his banishment from the Roost is lifted. Grudgingly he turns to the village of Esquialt. Village tradition grants him one Cycle, a turn of seasons from spring to spring, to earn the right to stay.
This year the ceremony has a bit more meaning. The Utlaak have attacked villages up and down the coast from Esquialt. The Elders are preparing for war and one more warrior could make a difference.
Siann doesn't trust the new warrior. His clenched fists and odd colored eyes bother her, and then there's the strange way fire seems to follow him, flaring up when he comes near. Y'keta and Siann must learn to work together, despite their differences, before the Utlaak reach the village and destroy them all.
Y'keta must be careful though. He knows if anyone-especially the inquisitive Siann-discovers his identity, it could destroy the village, tearing their history and traditions apart. But that might be a risk he has to take if Esquialt is to survive.
